The #6 GEO-LDN Online Seminar on “How the data revolution has transformed the UNCCD national reporting process” took place on December 12, 2023, from 2-3 PM (CEST). In a compelling presentation, Brian O'Connor, Geospatial Information Officer, and Sara Minelli, Programme Officer for Monitoring and Assessment, both from the UNCCD Secretariat in Bonn, Germany, shed light on the transformative impact of the data revolution on UNCCD reporting. The focal point of their discussion centered around the mandatory reporting obligations of UNCCD country Parties, emphasizing Article 26 of the Convention and decision 11/COP.1. O'Connor and Minelli outlined the imperative for countries to report on the measures taken to implement the Convention, emphasizing its crucial role in informing the Conference of the Parties through the CRIC on the progress of the UNCCD 2018-2030 strategic framework (decision 7/COP.13). A pivotal aspect of the presentation delved into the UNCCD Secretariat's role as the custodian of SDG Indicator 15.3.1, measuring the proportion of degraded land. O'Connor and Minelli underscored the secretariat's responsibility to collect information and provide comprehensive reports on the progress made in achieving this crucial sustainable development goal. The presentation marked a watershed moment, illustrating the significant strides taken in UNCCD reporting methodologies and the utilization of cutting-edge tools. O'Connor and Minelli navigated through the current status, providing insights into the ongoing process of recording and uploading data on the website, promising to share the results as soon as they become available. The presentation concluded with a glimpse into the future of UNCCD monitoring and reporting, offering a preview of the tools and methodologies that will shape the organization's approach in the coming years.
