Event Details
The Group on Earth Observations Land Degradation Neutrality (GEO-LDN) Flagship is set to play a key role at the UNCCD COP16 in Riyadh, taking place from December 3 to 12, 2024. This event provides a platform to advance global efforts in combating land degradation by showcasing how geospatial data and digital tools can drive sustainable land management practices.
The 2024 Global Dialogue Forum, held during COP16, continues the collaborative learning process initiated in South Africa in 2023. Through this process, partner countries gain access to geospatial data and innovative technologies to address land degradation challenges. These tools enable governments to prioritize actions, monitor results, enhance land-use planning, and prepare spatially-informed national reports for the UNCCD.
Participants from ten partner countries—Mongolia, Georgia, Senegal, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Colombia, Benin, Nigeria, and Peru—will share their experiences during the event. Their stories, which demonstrate the practical application of GEO-LDN tools, are also documented under the hashtag #HowtoLDN on GEO-LDN’s platforms, including LinkedIn (@geo-ldn), X (@geoldn_org), and the GEO-LDN Blog.
At COP16, GEO-LDN will host a rotating exhibition and presentations in the GEO & GEO-LDN Pavilion, offering insights into how countries are integrating geospatial tools to achieve their land degradation neutrality targets. The event also features a Storytelling Workshop on December 7, where teams from all partner countries will come together to share their progress and exchange lessons learned.
Throughout COP16, participants will benefit from targeted training sessions, peer-to-peer learning opportunities, and discussions with international experts, fostering collaboration across sectors and strengthening global efforts to combat land degradation.
