Capacity Development Activities

1. Postgraduate Programmes at the University of Energy and Natural Resources

The postgraduate programmes (MSc/Mphil) in Land Degradation Neutrality and PhD in Sustainable Land Management are designed with the support of GEO-LDN Flagship, UNCCD and UENR to train professionals, young scholars and individuals to effectively address the global land degradtion issues and encourage synergies.

2. Monthly Online Seminars

The monthly online seminars serve as an open forum for developers and practitioners to present their innovative tools, projects, and experiences in the field of remote sensing, data analysis, and mapping for spatial and land use planning. The seminars will be held every 4-6 weeks and will feature 30-40 minutes presentations followed by a lively Q&A session. They will be held online via MS-Teams, so you can participate from anywhere. The recorded seminars will also be made available on our website.

  • 3. Global & Regional Dialogue Forums
  • The global and regional dialogue forums are an interactive and participatory format that aims to create a sustainable and ongoing exchange and learning process with our community. Through peer-to-peer and south-to-south exchange, we work to illustrate best practices, direct input from experts in the field and capacity development opportunities. LDN is also strongly linked to Integrated Land Use Planning (ILUP) which can help address poverty reduction, food security and biodiversity conservation.

4. Online Support Sessions
  • Online Support Sessions are launched in March 2024 to continue the support for the insectoral country teams that took part in the Global dialogue Forum 2023. During the support sessions, country teams can share the progress made and challenges faced in implementing their roadmaps. They can also voice their concerns and the challenges faced in their.... In addition, the first GEO-LDN helpdesk hosted at the Regional Center for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) is available to provide technical support to the countries.

5. Working Group 1: Capacity Development

The aim of Working Group 1 (WG1) is to develop an innovative capacity building mechanism that provides answers to SDG 15.3 while addressing the needs of various stakeholders at regional, national and individual levels.

The outputs of WG2 and WG3, together with other reporting requirements and/or decision-making supporting tools, will be the input for the development of the capacity-building interventions. Rather than developing the content of the capacity-building interventions, WG 1 will explore and promote mechanisms to support, effectively and innovatively, the strengthening of the required capacities on the three intervention levels.

6. E-Learning Course on Land-cover Data for SDG15 Monitoring

In collaboration with FAO and UNCCD, we developed a free e-learning course on land-cover data and its crucial role in tracking SDG 15, which aims to preserve life on land through sustainable forest management, combating desertification, responding to land degradation, and protecting biodiversity. The course is primarily designed for government technical officers responsible for reporting on SDG indicators, but is of interest for anyone working on environmental monitoring.

7. GEO-LDN Helpdesk (via helpdesk@geo-ldn.org)

GEO-LDN has set up the first regional helpdesk, hosted by the Regional Centre for Mapping Resources for Development (RCMRD) in Kenya, to support RCMRD members and other parties of the Convention (UNCCD) in monitoring SDG15.3. The services of the helpdesk centre around the use of LDN Toolbox and the concept of LDN response hierarchy.
