Workshop: Climate Change in LDN Planning

On 29–30 April 2025, a workshop on integrating climate change into Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) planning was held at the GIZ headquarters in Bonn, Germany. The event was organized by Conservation International (CI) in collaboration with GEO-LDN and supported by GIZ.

The workshop aimed to advance methodologies for identifying areas vulnerable to land degradation under different climate scenarios, as well as areas showing improvement through restoration. This work responded to international policy processes and sought to support countries in incorporating climate change considerations into land use planning and decision-making.

Technical experts from various fields, including LDN monitoring, spatial planning, and tool development, reviewed a proposed report framework and provided feedback to improve its relevance and usability. The outcomes of the workshop were intended to inform a final report with recommendations.

During the first day, participants engaged in expert presentations, discussions on climate projections, and explored opportunities for alignment with related initiatives. The second day focused on interactive exercises, including a group prioritization process and mapping of existing planning tools, user groups, and opportunities to integrate climate projections into planning workflows.

The workshop resulted in a technical report on Incorporating Climate Futures into Planning for Land Degradation Neutrality, which can be found here.
