Social Tenure Domain Model (STDM)

Social Tenure Domain Model (STDM) is a software tool embedded in QGIS and part of the Fit-for-Purpose land administration framework. It supports inventorying all types of land tenure along the full continuum from informal to formal land rights by combining satellite and other spatial data on formal land titling with on-the-ground surveys. During field data collection, local tenure holders draw their land parcels on high-resolution satellite images (on paper or with a digital pen); these sketches are then digitized by scanning and vectorising, and a database entry is created for each land tenure holder, linked to the corresponding spatial features. In the context of LDN, STDM helps identify stakeholders and supports planning with strong local input. Its use requires computer facilities, QGIS skills, up-to-date satellite data, and capacity building, and it is mainly applied at local scales.
