Scalable Practices for Tree Conservation in Northern Ghana

Using the Data-Powered Positive Deviance approach, this study in Ghana’s Upper West Region identified why some communities preserve tree cover despite climate pressures. By combining satellite data with local insights, the research highlighted key practices such as tree-based livelihoods, land demarcation, cultural norms, and strong governance. From these, three scalable interventions emerged—the “golden mix”: tree product processing, tree planting for boundaries, and forest committees. These community-driven solutions offer a practical path to resilience and sustainable land management.
