Land is one of our most vital natural resources. Sustainable land management is essential for unlocking land value and driving economic development. Preparing future experts with the knowledge and skills to address land degradation is therefore of utmost importance. Against this background, the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani, Ghana, has launched its first international postgraduate programmes dedicated to Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN).
Building Capacity for the Future
The postgraduate programmes provide specialized knowledge and practical skills to nurture a new generation of professionals in land management. They also create a platform for applied research, linking academic work with real-world use cases and national problem statements. This approach strengthens reporting and implementation of LDN while giving students valuable hands-on experience.
Furthermore, the programmes foster networking opportunities among students, professors, researchers, and industry experts, creating a vibrant professional community around sustainable land management.
The New Programmes
With the support of the GEO-LDN Flagship and UNCCD, UENR has designed three international postgraduate programmes:
- Master of Science in Land Degradation Neutrality (MSc – LDN)
- Master of Philosophy in Land Degradation Neutrality (MPhil – LDN)
- Doctor of Philosophy in Sustainable Land Management (PhD – SLM)
All three programmes commenced in September 2023, accompanied by a scholarship scheme supported by a GIZ global project commissioned and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Equipping Future Leaders
The programmes integrate emerging global topics and trends in land management to ensure candidates are trained in state-of-the-art technologies and approaches. With the training, research opportunities, and professional networks offered, these postgraduate programmes aim to prepare the next generation of LDN practitioners to lead change, foster teamwork, and accelerate progress towards achieving LDN and beyond.
