The Global Training Workshop on “Strengthening Land Restoration Targets and Commitments” brought together stakeholders from 18 countries selected for the second round of the Target Setting Programme (TSP 2.0), alongside experts from UNCCD, UNCBD, FAO, UNDP, GIZ, and other distinguished institutions.
Supporting countries to set ambitious LDN targets
The workshop focused on helping countries make their Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) targets time-bound and spatially explicit. Geospatial data plays a critical role in this process, not only enabling spatially specific targets but also increasing efficiency in addressing LDN commitments through the use of Earth observation data.
To accelerate progress towards 2030 goals, the participating countries worked on revising their targets through activities such as:
- Establishing national LDN working groups
- Preparing for future-proof monitoring and evaluation, including the upcoming PRAIS 2026 reporting cycle
- Addressing the financing gap for LDN
Building synergies across Rio Conventions
A key emphasis of the workshop was identifying synergies with the other Rio Conventions: the UNFCCC and UNCBD.
The GEO-LDN Flagship has been supporting countries from the Global Dialogue Forum (GDF) in similar activities and is aligning this work with TSP 2.0. GEO-LDN aims to assist GDF countries, including those overlapping with TSP 2.0, by leveraging Earth observations for monitoring and implementation.
This approach underscores the importance of not only fostering synergies across the Rio Conventions but also maintaining strong collaboration within the land restoration community as a whole.
