The IMPACT (Image Processing) Toolbox is a free and open-source, browser-based application developed by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission. It combines functions for remote sensing, photo interpretation, and processing technologies in a portable, stand-alone GIS environment, enabling non-specialist users to easily perform essential pre-processing steps while providing a fast, user-friendly interface for visual editing and map validation.
No installation or virtual machines are required. The package can be copied onto a portable device for easy execution and data sharing. An internet connection is not essential, though it provides access to additional layers such as high-resolution WMS services from Google or other providers.
The IMPACT Toolbox contains modules for:
- Visual identification of forest degradation
- Soil erosion and loss (RUSLE)
- Ground-truth data collection
- Spatial statistics
All modules are designed with intuitive, easy-to-learn interfaces.
