#06 Online Seminar
How the data revolution has transformed the UNCCD national reporting process
The sixth GEO-LDN Online Seminar, “How the data revolution has transformed the UNCCD national reporting process,” took place on 12 December 2023 from 14:00 to 15:00 CEST. The session was presented by Brian O’Connor, Geospatial Information Officer, and Sara Minelli, Programme Officer for Monitoring and Assessment, from the UNCCD secretariat in Bonn, Germany.
The seminar highlighted the mandatory reporting obligations of UNCCD country Parties under Article 26 of the Convention and decision 11/COP.1. Reporting on measures to implement the Convention plays a central role in informing the Conference of the Parties, through the CRIC, on progress made towards the UNCCD 2018–2030 Strategic Framework (decision 7/COP.13).
A key focus was the role of the secretariat as custodian agency of SDG indicator 15.3.1, which measures the proportion of degraded land. The session underlined the responsibility to collect, compile and report information on progress towards achieving land degradation neutrality.
Participants received an update on current reporting methodologies, including the process of recording and uploading data through the UNCCD platform. The seminar concluded with a look ahead at new tools and approaches that will further strengthen national reporting and monitoring in the coming years.
